In a groundbreaking development for dental care, the company Perceptive has achieved a significant milestone with the first fully automated dental procedure conducted by a robot dentist. This advancement showcases a robotic arm, guided by artificial intelligence (A.I.), performing a precise tooth-shaping task for a dental crown.
Perceptive’s innovation promises “enhanced precision and efficiency” that could surpass traditional human dentists. The company also asserts that this technology will deliver an “improved patient experience.”
Typically, fitting a dental crown involves two separate appointments, each lasting approximately an hour. However, Perceptive’s technology aims to streamline this process, potentially completing the entire procedure in about 15 minutes.
Despite these promising developments, the robotic dentist is not yet available for public use. The technology remains several years from obtaining FDA approval, with an estimated five-year timeline before it could be integrated into dental practices nationwide.
Perceptive has recently secured $30 million in funding to advance its technology. Notably, one of the investors is Dr. Edward Zuckerberg, a dentist and the father of Mark Zuckerberg.
