Last year, over 70% of Mackay schoolchildren treated at mobile dental vans needed fillings for tooth decay, underscoring a significant oral health challenge worsened by sugary foods and poor hygiene. School dentists across the district provided 4583 fillings, highlighting the critical need for preventive dental care.
Dr. Ronel Bornman from Mackay Base Hospital’s Dental Unit noted only 23% of eligible school children utilized the vans’ free services. During Dental Health Week (August 5-11), Mackay parents are urged to prioritize regular dental check-ups for their children.
Dr. Bornman emphasized routine dental visits for children aged 4 to 16 for early detection and prevention of tooth decay. She stressed the importance of maintaining natural teeth and practicing good oral hygiene, including daily brushing, a balanced diet, and opting for water instead of sugary drinks.
The initiative aims to familiarize children with dental care early on, reducing anxiety and promoting positive experiences. Mackay’s school dental vans offer free services to local schools, benefiting students from Prep to Year 10 with a valid Medicare card, to ensure they grow up with healthy teeth and gums.
