Daniel Merkel, the esteemed founder and CEO of American Orthodontics, has passed away at the age of 95. His death was confirmed in an obituary released by his family on July 31st. Merkel, who established American Orthodontics in Sheboygan, relocated there with his wife, Betty, who survives him. He is also mourned by three daughters, a daughter-in-law, and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Merkel’s journey began when he sought to address the high costs associated with orthodontic appliances. Determined to provide affordable solutions for consumers, he launched his business in 1968. Since then, American Orthodontics has expanded significantly, now employing 450 people and surpassing its initial annual sales of $300,000 in a single day.
A visitation for Daniel Merkel is scheduled for Monday, August 12th, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Reinbold-Novak Funeral Home in Sheboygan. On Tuesday, August 13th, visitation will continue at St. Dominic Catholic Church beginning at 9 a.m., leading up to the Mass at 10 a.m.
In his obituary, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, individuals honor Merkel’s memory by performing a random act of kindness or sharing a joke, reflecting his spirit and generosity.
