A recent report from Clearpay reveals a notable increase in spending on beauty and self-care products among older generations in the lead-up to summer holidays. Comparing data from April to June 2024 with the same period in the previous year, Clearpay observed a 90% surge in fake tan purchases and a 71% rise in teeth whitening strip sales among Generation X (ages 44 to 59) and Baby Boomers (ages 60 to 78).
The data also highlights a broader trend of growing investment in beauty and skincare products, reflecting a shift towards at-home treatments. This trend may be driven by consumers seeking cost-effective alternatives to salon services.
Clearpay’s analysis shows significant increases in sales of manicure tools, hair masks, pedicure tools, and LED masks. Additionally, a commissioned survey found that men are budgeting an average of £129 to achieve a “TikTok ready” look for summer, while women are planning to spend around £118.
The survey also revealed that 38% of respondents are making pre-holiday skincare and beauty upgrades to enhance their vacation experience, and 27% are influenced by social media trends. Furthermore, 10% of individuals are preparing for holiday photos on Instagram.
Overall, 83% of those surveyed indicated they are spending the same amount or more this year on pre-holiday items compared to previous years.
