Government Dental College (GDC) celebrated Oral Hygiene Day on August 1, honoring Dr. GB Shankalkar, a pioneer in periodontics and a key figure in founding the Government Dental Colleges in Nagpur and Mumbai. Shankalkar was also a co-founder of the Indian Society of Periodontology.
The event highlighted the need for comprehensive oral health care. Dr. Abhay Datarkar, Dean of GDC, noted that 85-90% of Indian adults face oral health issues, with over 95% suffering from dental caries and more than 50% from periodontal disease, according to the WHO.
The celebration featured a poster competition announced by Dr. Mangesh Fadnaik, Head of the Department, and a free dental check-up camp for the community. Dr. Vaibhav Karemore, Public Relations Officer, stressed the importance of brushing twice daily, flossing, regular dental visits, and maintaining overall oral hygiene, including quitting smoking to reduce gum disease risk.
