Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu has underscored a concerning trend: many children experiencing tooth decay either fail to recognize the pain or choose to disregard it, allowing the condition to worsen.
Speaking at the National Toothbrushing Day event at Rishikul Primary School in Nasinu, Dr. Lalabalavu stressed the urgent need for cultivating strong oral hygiene habits from a young age. He pointed out that early education and consistent dental practices are essential for preventing future dental issues.
“I urge all children to maintain the habit of brushing your teeth twice daily, not just for today but as a lifelong practice,” Dr. Lalabalavu advised. “Ensure each brushing session lasts two minutes.”
Dr. Lalabalavu called for a united effort among parents, educators, and healthcare professionals to advocate for effective oral hygiene routines. The Health Ministry has highlighted that community involvement in such initiatives is crucial for securing healthier futures for children.
The National Toothbrushing Day saw participation from over 170,000 students across Fiji. The event was organized in collaboration with Colgate-Palmolive Pte Limited, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Education.
