A Massachusetts woman, Emily Duval, has gone viral after sharing her dramatic experience following wisdom teeth removal. The 23-year-old from Boston initially thought the procedure on July 17 was routine. However, severe swelling soon made her face appear almost unrecognizable, leading to significant distress.
Duval’s condition worsened despite reassurances from her dentist that swelling was normal. By the third day, her face felt as if it were “going to explode.” Unlike her previous extraction, which had minor swelling, this experience was severe and prolonged.
After a week, Duval’s oral surgeon discovered an abscess, which was drained, and a wick was inserted to aid recovery. The Mayo Clinic notes that abscesses are pus-filled pockets resulting from bacterial infections and require treatment to avoid complications.
Duval posted a video of her swelling on TikTok on July 20, which quickly went viral with over 7 million views and 520,000 likes. The video drew a range of reactions, from concern to humor, with viewers sharing similar experiences and advice.
“I never expected my video to blow up like that,” Duval said. She warns others to be cautious about wisdom teeth removal and seek medical attention if unusual symptoms arise.
