Ahead of Dental Health Week (August 5-11), a survey by the Australian Dental Association (ADA) highlights significant gaps in gum care among Australians. The survey shows that over half of the 25,000 respondents prioritize teeth over gums, with only 28 percent valuing both equally. Shockingly, 25 percent rarely consider gum care.
Despite brushing only cleaning 60 percent of tooth surfaces, 74 percent of Australians seldom or never floss. Dr. Mikaela Chinotti of the ADA warns that neglecting gum care can lead to bleeding gums and severe gum disease. With one in four Australians experiencing gum inflammation and one in three suffering from periodontitis, Dr. Chinotti stresses the need for improved oral hygiene practices to protect gum health.
