In a recent operation, Thai police arrested two women accused of offering unauthorized orthodontic services after learning the trade online. The suspects, aged 31 and 25, face charges for providing unlicensed fashion braces and practicing dentistry without proper certification.
Police Major General Wittaya Srisrisaraphap, head of the Consumer Protection Police Division, led the crackdown in coordination with senior officers. The operation culminated in the arrest of Soraya, 31, in Kho Hong, Hat Yai, and Kankanit, 25, in Khuan Lang, Hat Yai, following an undercover sting initiated via social media ads.
On July 27, undercover officers arranged appointments with the suspects through social media platforms, leading to their apprehension. Authorities confiscated a substantial amount of orthodontic equipment, including 77 braces tools, 82 O-rings, 67 chain elastics, five rolls of braces wire, 17 brackets, and two mobile phones, with a combined value exceeding 80,000 baht (approximately US$2,200).
The suspects had been promoting their services and selling orthodontic supplies online, predominantly targeting young clients, including secondary school students.
During questioning, Soraya and Kankanit admitted to the charges, revealing they lacked formal dental training and had instead relied on online tutorials to learn their skills. They sourced their equipment from online vendors and catered mainly to students seeking cost-effective orthodontic options, according to reports from KhaoSod.
Soraya has been processed at Kho Hong Police Station, while Kankanit is undergoing legal proceedings at Hat Yai Police Station.
