As summer travel picks up, a leading UK dentist is warning holidaymakers about the importance of maintaining their oral hygiene routines during long-haul flights.
With many Brits gearing up for their summer getaways, a crucial aspect of their daily routine—brushing their teeth—is often overlooked. Dr. Nyree Whitley, Chief Clinical Officer at mydentist, emphasizes the need for dental care even while in transit.
“Traveling can be an exciting time, but it’s essential not to compromise on your oral health,” Dr. Whitley stated. “While some airlines provide complimentary toothbrushes in their amenity kits, it’s wise to bring your own dental essentials if they aren’t available.”
Dr. Whitley advises that travelers pack a travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste, even if space is limited. “Additionally, consider including floss and a small bottle of mouthwash to keep your breath fresh throughout the flight,” she suggested.
Maintaining a consistent oral hygiene routine is crucial, according to Dr. Whitley. She recommends brushing your teeth twice a day as you would at home. Neglecting to brush can have detrimental effects on oral health.
“When teeth are left unbrushed for several days, plaque can harden into tartar, which attracts more plaque and can lead to gingivitis, gum disease, and tooth decay,” Dr. Whitley warned.
To ensure optimal oral health while flying, she advises waiting at least an hour after consuming snacks or drinks—especially alcohol or sugary beverages—before brushing your teeth. “Adhering to your usual at-home routine as closely as possible can help ensure a healthy and enjoyable holiday,” she concluded.
