In a significant legal settlement, a Lincoln man has received £23,000 in compensation from Guildhall Dental Care after alleging that the clinic’s negligence led to years of pain and discomfort.
James Littleover, 37, from Lincoln, suffered ongoing infections and severe discomfort due to alleged failures by his dental providers to accurately diagnose and address issues with nine of his teeth. The case was resolved outside of court.
According to Mr. Littleover, his troubles began after he became a patient at Guildhall Dental Care in 2006. Despite undergoing several treatments for dental decay between 2016 and 2019, he continued to experience severe symptoms. It wasn’t until he visited a private dental practice in 2021 that he was informed of additional decay and was told that his previous treatments were defective.
The ongoing issues led Mr. Littleover to endure numerous abscesses and infections, ultimately necessitating root canal treatments. He reported being in so much pain that he relied on painkillers regularly.
In 2021, Mr. Littleover sought assistance from the Dental Law Partnership, which reviewed his dental records and established a case against Guildhall Dental Care. The legal team found that the dental professionals had failed to diagnose and treat decay in nine teeth and had not provided adequate restorations on several others. This negligence reportedly resulted in repeated root fillings, the loss of one tooth, and additional restorative procedures. There is also concern that Mr. Littleover could lose up to eight more teeth in the future, which might have been preventable.
“I now dread going to the dentist. The prospect of more extractions and persistent pain is overwhelming,” Mr. Littleover said. “Even now, I can only chew on one side of my mouth. There’s still a long journey ahead to fully address these issues.”
Tim Armitage from the Dental Law Partnership commented that Mr. Littleover’s distress and pain were entirely avoidable, emphasizing that the dental issues could have been managed more effectively.
Guildhall Dental Care has been contacted for a statement but has not yet responded.
