Improper brushing can damage your gums, warns Dr. Andrej Bozic, an oral surgeon at Dentum. Excessive force can cause gum recession, exposing tooth roots and increasing sensitivity and decay risk.
Signs of Gum Recession
Watch for these symptoms:
Tooth Sensitivity: Increased sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods.
Visible Tooth Roots: Teeth may appear longer.
Gum Discomfort: Soreness or tenderness, especially after brushing.
Bleeding Gums: Gums that bleed easily during brushing or flossing.
Brushing Tips
Dr. Bozic recommends using a soft-bristled toothbrush and brushing with light pressure in a circular motion. Avoid aggressive brushing and replace your toothbrush every three to four months.
Following these practices can help maintain gum health and prevent further damage.
