A visit to the dentist can be a nerve-wracking experience for many. However, maintaining a routine of brushing twice daily and minimizing sugar intake can make dental visits much less daunting.
Unfortunately, not all patients have a straightforward experience. Dr. Sam Koh, a dentist operating near Melbourne, Australia, recently recounted some of the most alarming cases he has encountered, shedding light on the perils of DIY dental practices.
In an interview with 7news, Dr. Koh shared three particularly distressing cases. One involved a man who arrived at the clinic with his mouth bound by plaster mesh and dental adhesive. Dr. Koh explained that the man had endured recurrent infections and abscesses throughout his life, opting to pop them without seeking professional help. For nearly a year, he had resorted to this makeshift solution, living in constant discomfort.
Another troubling instance involved a patient who had used temporary glue to bond his teeth together in an attempt to manage severe gum disease. Dr. Koh noted that the man’s teeth were loose and the glue was a desperate measure to keep his front teeth stable.
While these scenarios may seem extreme, the third case hit closer to home. A 22-year-old man, who should typically have healthy teeth, faced the shocking discovery that all of his teeth were severely infected, necessitating extraction. Dr. Koh described the young man’s mouth as frequently swollen and plagued by abscesses. Thankfully, following treatment, the patient has been able to turn his life around, but this case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of neglecting dental hygiene.
To avoid ending up in such painful situations, Dr. Koh emphasizes the importance of a consistent oral care routine: brushing for two minutes twice a day and flossing regularly. He also suggests replacing toothbrushes every three months and being mindful of the timing of dental hygiene practices. Some experts recommend brushing before breakfast, while cautioning against using mouthwash immediately after brushing, as this can diminish the effectiveness of fluoride toothpaste.
