A recent study published in the Journal of Patient Deceit has uncovered that individuals frequently misrepresent their dental hygiene habits, particularly regarding flossing. According to the research, every participant admitted to fabricating the frequency with which they floss during dental appointments.
“I lie through my teeth,” one participant humorously remarked, before revealing a piece of lettuce wedged between his molars.
The study’s lead researcher, Dr. Steve Toothman, a local dentist, initiated this inquiry out of frustration with his patients’ dishonesty. “I knew something was amiss; it was time to confront this issue,” he stated.
The findings have left some dentists disillusioned. Dr. Bernie Crest expressed his disappointment: “I truly wanted to trust my patients. Learning that they’ve been dishonest is disheartening. It’s been tough—I’ve resorted to bourbon every night since.”
Dr. Crest is now contemplating a career shift due to the revelations.
Dr. Toothman noted that fear plays a significant role in this deception. “People are often too intimidated to be truthful with their dentists. They’d rather exaggerate, claiming they floss twenty times a day, than admit the truth,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of honesty in maintaining oral health.
Several study participants confessed to never having used dental floss. One anonymous participant admitted, “I don’t even know what dental floss is. I feel embarrassed to share that with my dentist, so I just nod along, pretending to agree with everything he says.”
Sources confirm that this anonymous participant is among Dr. Crest’s patients.
