Weston-super-Mare, UK – A state-of-the-art mobile dental surgery has commenced operations as of Tuesday, June 18, offering critical services to vulnerable groups including the homeless, abuse survivors, cancer patients, fishing communities, impoverished families, and those battling addiction.
The initiative, supported by The Health Lottery, has seen over £130 million raised for various health and wellbeing causes throughout Great Britain. This funding has facilitated the refurbishment, stocking, and deployment of Dentaid’s new unit, which will also host monthly dental clinics in Weston-super-Mare throughout the summer.
Equipped with the latest technology, the mobile unit enables volunteer dentists and dental nurses to provide a comprehensive range of services such as oral cancer screenings, dental health advice, cleanings, fillings, and extractions.
Dentaid has responded to the escalating demand for its services by expanding its fleet of mobile dental units, bolstered by substantial support from the dental industry and its community. This year, the charity plans to conduct nearly 1000 charity dental clinics across the UK, a significant increase from the 422 clinics held last year.
For homeless individuals, dental issues can compound challenges in breaking free from poverty and addiction. Factors including substance misuse, mental health issues, poor diet, smoking, and limited access to oral care products exacerbate the problem. Research indicates that 70% of homeless people suffer from toothache, and 15% have attempted DIY tooth extractions.
Patients supported by Dentaid face practical, emotional, and mental barriers to accessing dental care. The transient nature of homelessness often complicates appointment attendance, and many individuals battle anxiety or struggle to prioritize oral health due to their circumstances. Dental damage resulting from diet, addiction, violence, or abuse is also common among this demographic.
Dentaid’s mobile dental units visit soup kitchens, hostels, night shelters, and emergency accommodations, where volunteer dental professionals offer screenings, advice, and treatment. By establishing regular service provision, Dentaid aims to dismantle barriers and provide vulnerable patients with essential dental care.
Jill Harding, Communications Manager at Dentaid, emphasized the impact of these services: “Dentaid’s mobile dental units are a lifeline for many, providing essential care to those who need it most. This new unit, supported by The Health Lottery, will allow us to reach even more people in Weston-super-Mare and beyond, offering vital services that can make a real difference in their lives.”
Carly Troullis from The Health Lottery expressed pride in supporting Dentaid: “We are incredibly proud to support Dentaid with this initiative. The work they do is truly inspiring, and we are committed to helping them deliver much-needed dental care to vulnerable communities. This partnership reflects our ongoing dedication to improving health and well-being across the country.”
This mobile dental unit represents a crucial step forward in addressing dental health disparities among vulnerable populations, ensuring access to quality care regardless of individual circumstances.
