EMERSON, NE (KTIV) – Providing essential oral health services to underserved communities, dentists and hygienists gathered at Saint Luke’s Lutheran Church in Emerson for a special initiative by the Northeast Nebraska Public Health Department.
Known as “Creating New Smiles,” this program aims to bridge the gap in dental care access for rural residents. Quarterly free dental clinics are offered by the state health department, ensuring individuals in remote areas receive necessary treatments despite challenges in accessing traditional dental offices.
Services offered at the recent clinic included screenings, cleanings, fluoride treatments, and sealants. Health officials were also on hand to assist patients in finding ongoing dental care, if needed.
Stacy Benne, a Registered Dental Hygienist with the Public Health Department, emphasized the importance of such initiatives: “It’s a great way for us to be able to reach out and help the underserved population. Kind of bring services to them if they can’t make it to a dentist’s office for some reason or another.”
The next oral health clinic is scheduled for June 25 and 26 in Wakefield, Nebraska, continuing the mission to improve dental health accessibility across the region.
