The 48th annual National Smile Month, running from May 13 to June 13, 2024, continues its long-standing tradition of promoting oral health awareness. Established by the Oral Health Foundation in 1977, this campaign aims to emphasize the importance of a healthy smile and maintaining good oral health throughout life.
Dr. Nigel Carter, Chief Executive of the Oral Health Foundation, states: “Our goal is to advocate for the benefits of a healthy smile and the importance of good oral hygiene, not just during the campaign, but as a lifelong commitment.”
Theme of 2024: ‘Love Your Smile’
This year’s theme, ‘love your smile,’ highlights the significance of consistent oral hygiene, smart dietary choices, and proper use of oral care products. It underscores the connection between a smile, confidence, and overall well-being, while addressing the diseases and conditions that can adversely affect oral health.
Addressing Common Oral Health Issues
In conjunction with National Smile Month, the Oral Health Foundation conducted a survey to identify the most prevalent oral health issues in the UK. The findings revealed that 76% of respondents experienced dental health problems in the past year, with sensitive teeth being the most common complaint at 35%.
“Living with sensitive teeth can be a silent struggle, often unseen but highly uncomfortable,” says Dr. Carter. “Managing sensitive teeth involves brushing with appropriate pressure, using toothpaste designed for sensitivity, and avoiding acidic foods and drinks.”
Bleeding gums, reported by 34% of participants, were identified as a significant concern. Miranda Steeples, President of the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT), remarks, “Bleeding gums signal inflammation due to plaque buildup. Effective brushing with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between teeth, and using mouthwash can help prevent gum disease.”
Toothache affected 24% of those surveyed, while dry mouth and bad breath were common among 17%. The Oral Health Foundation highlighted that oral health problems can have broader implications for overall health, linking gum disease with conditions like heart disease and diabetes.
Steeples emphasizes, “Maintaining oral health is a lifelong commitment. Regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste, mindful sugar intake, and routine dental check-ups are essential for preventing and addressing potential issues early on.”
Campaign Launch and Community Engagement
The National Smile Month campaign launched at the Foundling Museum in London on May 15. Dr. Carter drew a parallel between the historical inequalities faced by foundlings and modern oral health disparities.
“A simple smile can profoundly impact an individual’s well-being and society,” he notes. “Good oral health correlates with better overall health, contributing to stronger communities and a happier society.”
Ben Atkins, former President of the Oral Health Foundation, highlighted the mental health implications of poor oral health, referencing Wrigley’s Oral Health Index. One-third of survey participants reported experiencing stress or anxiety due to oral health issues.
Community engagement is a cornerstone of National Smile Month. The Whittington Health Trust shared their outreach efforts, including supervised toothbrushing, fluoride varnishing, and oral health training for early years staff. A recent event reached 900 local children, aiming to foster a generation free from dental disease.
Support and Participation
National Smile Month 2024 is supported by major industry names, including Oral-B, Haleon, Boots, the Wrigley Oral Health Programme, EMS, Listerine, and the BSDHT. As the campaign nears its conclusion on June 13, there are still opportunities to participate. One simple way to show support is by taking a ‘smiley selfie’ and sharing it to spread awareness.
Join National Smile Month in celebrating the power of a healthy smile and contribute to a brighter, healthier future for all.
