An official investigation has been initiated into potential negligence at a dental clinic in the northwestern province of Bursa, following the unfortunate demise of a 5-year-old child who had undergone a dental procedure.
Elena and Aydın Sönmez brought their only child, Deniz Sönmez, to a private dental clinic , seeking treatment for a toothache.
Allegedly, the child underwent a procedure involving general anesthesia after an examination revealed decayed teeth. Subsequent reports from local media outlined that following the cessation of anesthesia, the child, who had one tooth extracted and four filled, experienced illness. Sönmez reportedly suffered from severe bleeding in the mouth, accompanied by fever and tremors.
Despite the visible complications, the family was reportedly reassured that the symptoms were a consequence of the anesthesia, and they were discharged with prescribed medication.
Around 20 minutes after returning home, Sönmez fainted, prompting the family to rush him to a children’s hospital. Unfortunately, he succumbed to multiple organ failure on the morning of November 13, attributed to oxygen deprivation.
As the body of Deniz Sönmez underwent examination at the morgue, the Bursa Public Prosecutor’s Office initiated an inquiry. Simultaneously, the Provincial Health Directorate launched an investigation in response to the family’s complaint.
Officials from the dental facility have indicated that they promptly notified the Provincial Health Directorate and have refrained from providing further comments on the matter. The unfolding circumstances surrounding this tragedy emphasize the need for a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the untimely death of the 5-year-old child.
