Suramya Sharma, an MDS, BDS student in the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine’s (CU SDM) Advanced Standing International Student Program (ISP), brings a unique blend of math, science, art, and creativity to her dental studies. Hailing from Delhi, India, Sharma holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in dentistry and worked as a general dentist and periodontist in New Delhi for four years before pursuing her dental education in the United States.
Sharma’s dream of coming to the U.S. became a reality when she relocated to California in 2019. While applying to dental schools, she worked as a dental assistant and engaged in volunteer work within both dental and non-dental communities. Her passion for creativity extends beyond dentistry; she’s a trained dancer, enjoys cooking as a stress reliever, and loves exploring Colorado and other destinations.
When CU SDM launched a T-shirt design contest, Sharma saw an opportunity to express her creativity. She remarked, “I thought it would be a good chance to use my creativity. It’s something in my wheelhouse and something that I like to do.”
Bridging Dentistry and Design
The 2023 Student T-shirt Design Contest encouraged CU SDM students and residents to create artwork reflecting the school’s anniversary theme: “50 years of innovation.” Sharma’s winning design incorporates various elements that represent the school’s mission areas, including education, research, patient care, and community engagement.
Sharma explained the significance of each component:
“1973-2023” commemorates the institution’s first 50 years, serving as a foundation for the future.
The circle of people holding hands signifies the school’s commitment to community service and collaborative learning within the SDM community.
“Innovation. Excellence. Growth.” embodies the SDM’s present and future focus on driving change, achieving excellence, and continual personal growth.
The central tooth serves as a reminder of the importance of oral health, while the accompanying flower symbolizes both growth and the artistic and scientific aspects of dentistry.
Sharma’s design beautifully bridges the worlds of dentistry and design, showcasing her multidimensional talents and dedication to her craft.
