Recent data has unveiled an increase in the occurrence of tooth decay among children in Guernsey since 2017.
The States of Guernsey reported a notable rise in the number of children requiring treatment through the Children’s Dental Service. Referrals to this service surged from 513 to 985 between 2017 and 2023, with admissions linked to tooth decay and tooth extractions registering an 11% uptick.
Dr. Natasha Flavell, Chair of the Guernsey Dental Association, emphasized the importance of taking early action to curb tooth decay. While acknowledging the State’s efforts, including free check-ups, she stressed that parents should proactively bring their children to dentists before any signs of decay emerge.
Guernsey’s States introduced free annual check-ups for those below 18 years old in 2023, along with supervised tooth brushing in nurseries and pre-schools.
In 2023, the service administered general anesthesia to 86 children aged 12 or younger, resulting in 293 extracted teeth, 45 fillings, and 114 crowns fitted.
The Guernsey Dental Association expressed concern over the rising trend, although a clear explanation for the surge remains elusive.
Dr. Ushita Shah, owner of Bridge Dental Clinic, attributed the rise to excessive hidden sugar consumption among children. She cited the prevalence of sugar-laden products heavily marketed to children, such as breakfast cereals, yogurts, and fruit drinks.
Dr. Shah emphasized the importance of early intervention to prevent decay progression. Detecting and addressing decay in its early stages facilitates straightforward preventive treatment.
National statistics in England highlight tooth decay as the leading cause of hospital admissions among children aged six to ten. Notably, NHS hospitals reported 42,180 tooth extractions last year, with 63% of them being linked to decay, incurring costs of £81 million.
Dr. Flavell emphasized the role of adults as role models, advocating for proper oral hygiene and healthy eating habits to instill the importance of dental care in children.
