Periodontal disease mainly includes gingivitis and periodontitis, which has a high incidence and is more serious in the elderly population. There is clear evidence that periodontal disease is associated with markers of inflammation, cardiovascular disease, and tumors of the digestive system. Studies have shown that short sleep duration can lead to a variety of adverse health outcomes, and short sleep also increases the risk of infection and may activate inflammatory signaling pathways. Numerous studies have reported an association between short sleep and periodontal disease, but the conclusions are inconsistent. A meta-analysis published in J Clin Periodontol assessed the association between short sleep duration and periodontal disease, including tooth loss and periodontitis.
The researchers searched for relevant studies and performed MR analyses using inverse variance weighted (IVW), weighted median, MR-Egger, and MR-Robust Adjusted Profile Score (RAPS) methods to assess the effects of short sleep on tooth loss and tooth loss. Zhou Yan’s causality.
As a result, a total of 7 cross-sectional studies including 40,196 people were included in this meta-analysis. Results of the analysis showed that the association between short sleep duration and periodontal disease was not statistically significant (odds (OR) = 1.13, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.99, 1.28; P = 0.076). In the MR analysis, we did not observe genetically determined shorter sleep duration and tooth loss (β: -0.056; 95% CI: -0.181 to 0.068; P = 0.376) and periodontitis (β: -0.112; 95% CI: -0.340 to 0.117; P = 0.339) there was a statistically significant causal link.
Taken together, the findings of this study suggest that, based on current evidence, short sleep duration is not statistically associated with the risk of periodontal disease, including tooth loss and periodontitis. Future research needs to pay attention to the measurement of sleep duration, the choice of statistical models, and other related areas of sleep health.
