Dental implants are implants made of artificial materials that are placed in the alveolar bone of the edentulous area to replace the root of the tooth. Therefore, it is fundamentally different from the roots of natural growth. Because dental implants are a surgical procedure, there is a high chance of side effects. Let’s take a look at the possible side effects of dental implants
1. Infection: Infection is often caused by contamination of the surgical area or surgical instruments and other complications.
2. Hemorrhage: Submucosal or subcutaneous hemorrhage is prone to occur due to the large damage of mucoperiosteal dissection or extensive submucosal dissection, especially poor postoperative compression. Submental congestion can also occur when the implant penetrates the lower edge of the mandible in one-stage surgery. Local congestion can generally be absorbed after a few days, and cold compresses can be applied in the early postoperative period and hot compresses in the late period. Due to systemic factors, those with bleeding tendency should be treated symptomatically.
3. Gingival hyperplasia: Due to too little gingival penetration of the abutment, or poor connection between the abutment and the bridge, resulting in poor local hygiene, long-term chronic inflammatory stimulation can cause gingival hyperplasia.
4. Perforation of sinus mucosa: During maxillary implantation, due to insufficient bone mass, it is easy to penetrate the mucosa of the maxillary sinus or nasal floor, which is bound to cause infection around the implant, so it should be removed in time.
6. Gingivitis: After the implant denture is repaired, due to poor oral hygiene or improper cleaning methods, the implant abutment exposed in the oral cavity is poorly cleaned, and the plaque adhered to the foundation post stimulates the gums. Therefore, in addition to ensuring that the implant itself is clean during production and processing, the surface of the abutment must be carefully protected during surgical operations and patient self-care.
