First explain two concepts:
1. Wisdom teeth are the last teeth in your mouth now, scientific name is the third molar
2. The second molar is the tooth in your mouth next to the wisdom tooth, also called the penultimate tooth, or the adjacent tooth, which means neighbor.
If the wisdom teeth are in the right position, which means that their position and angle are normal, then the wisdom teeth can be kept. However, if the wisdom teeth are not in the correct position, but are commonly referred to as misplaced teeth, medically called impacted teeth, they should be removed as soon as possible. If such a tooth is not extracted, there are many dangers:
1. Can cause periodontal destruction of second molars. Due to the existence of impacted wisdom teeth, it is easy to cause inflammation in the distal part of the second molar, the epithelium shrinks, periodontitis is formed, and the bone plate is lost. The direct consequence is that the second molar will be extracted prematurely.
2. It is easy to cause caries of wisdom teeth and second molars. Due to the existence of wisdom teeth, the wisdom teeth and second molars are not easy to clean, so it is easy to cause holes in these two teeth. Of course, if the holes are deep, it will hurt.
3. Pericoronitis occurs. Impacted teeth are covered by soft tissue, forming blind pockets, which become a good place for bacteria to breed and cause pericoronitis. If the impacted teeth are not extracted, pericoronitis can recur repeatedly, and it may gradually worsen and cause a series of complications.
4. Adjacent tooth root resorption occurs. The direct consequence is to affect the service life of adjacent teeth. Early extraction of impacted teeth helps preserve adjacent teeth.
5. Extraction of impacted teeth can prevent the occurrence of odontogenic cysts and tumors. If the impacted tooth exists, the follicular sac also exists. Although it does not change in most cases, there is also the possibility of cystic change to become odontogenic cyst and odontogenic tumor.
6. pain. Completely impacted bone can also sometimes cause some unexplained pain.
7. Early extraction of impacted teeth may be effective in preventing crowding.
8. The presence of some impacted teeth may also cause temporomandibular joint disorders. Early extraction can remove the factors that lead to the disorder of the occlusal relationship.
